    Hierarchically structured composites and porous materials

    This thesis develops a hydrogel bead templating technique for the preparation of hierarchically structured composites and porous materials. This method involves using slurries of hydrogel beads with different size distributions as templates. Mixing hydrogel beads with a scaffolding material and then allowing the scaffold to harden, followed by drying of the composite leaves pores in the place of the hydrogel beads. These pores reflect the size and shape of the templates used and the porosity reflects the volume percentage of hydrogel bead slurry mixed with the scaffolding material. A viscous trapping technique has been developed which utilises the viscosity of methylcellulose to stop sedimentation of the scaffold particles during network formation. Both of these methods are attractive due to being cheap, non-toxic and they use food grade materials which allows their use in a multitude of applications.Porous and hierarchically porous gypsum composites have been prepared using both hydrogel bead templating and viscous trapping techniques, or a combination of the two. The level of control over the final microstructure of the dried composites offered by these techniques allowed for a systematic investigation of their thermal and mechanical properties as a function of the pore size, porosity and hierarchical microstructure. It has been shown that the thermal conductivity decreases linearly with increasing porosity, however it was not dependent on the pore sizes that were investigated here. The mechanical properties, however, were significantly different. The porous composites produced with either small hydrogel beads (100 μm) or methylcellulose solution had approximately twice the compressional strength and Young’s modulus compared to the ones produced with large hydrogel beads (600 μm).The sound insulating properties of porous and hierarchically porous gypsum composites have also been investigated. With increasing porosity, the sound transmission loss decreases, as expected. At constant porosity, it is shown that the composites with large pores perform significantly better than the ones with small pores in the frequency range of 75-2000 Hz. At higher frequencies (>2400 Hz) the composites with smaller pores begin to perform better. The material’s microstructure has been studied in an attempt to explain this effect.The hydrogel templating technique can be used to prepare composite materials if the drying step is not performed. Hydrogel beads have been incorporated into a soap matrix. The dissolution rate of these composites as a function of hydrogel bead size and volume percentage of hydrogel beads incorporated within the soap matrix has been investigated. It has been shown that the dissolution rate can be increased by increasing the volume percentage of hydrogel beads used during composite preparation but it is independent on their size distribution. Finally, three methods of controlling the release rate of encapsulated species from these soap-hydrogel bead composites have been shown. The first method involved varying the size distribution of the hydrogel beads incorporated within the soap matrix. The second involved changing the concentration of the gelling polymer and the final method required co-encapsulation of an oppositely charged polyelectrolyte.A binary hydrogel system has been developed and its rheological and thermal properties have been investigated. It consists of agar and methylcellulose and shows significantly improved rheological properties at high temperatures compared to agar alone. The storage modulus of the two component hydrogel shows a maximum at 55 °C which was explained by a sol-gel phase transition of methylcellulose, evidence of which was seen during differential scanning calorimetry measurements. After exposure of this binary hydrogel to high temperatures above the melting point of agar alone (> 120 °C), it maintains its structure. This suggests it could be used for high temperature templating or structuring of food products.The melt-resistant binary hydrogel was used for the preparation of pancake-hydrogel composites using hydrogel bead templating. Mixing slurry of hydrogel beads of this composition with pancake batter, followed by preparation at high temperatures produced pancakes with hydrogel beads incorporated within. Bomb calorimetry measurements showed that the caloric density could be reduced by a controlled amount by varying the volume percentage of hydrogel beads used during preparation of the composites. This method could be applied to other food products such as biscuits, waffles and breakfast bars. Furthermore, there is scope for development of this method by the encapsulation of flavour enhancing or nutritionally beneficial ingredients within the hydrogel beads

    The meaning of charity in Locke's political thought

Article will be released April 2010.The recent ‘religious turn’ within Locke scholarship has stressed the need to understand his theological commitments when approaching his political thought. One area of interpretation that has been completely transformed by this heightened sensitivity to the religious roots of Locke’s thought is his account of property ownership which, it is claimed, contains a ‘right to charity’—a subsistence entitlement that trumps established ownership rights. However, this increasingly accepted interpretive claim has been made without significant attention to the way in which charity is deployed throughout Locke’s writing. The aim of this article is to try and get to grips with Locke’s various usages of the term and determine whether the concept he deploys is a consistent one. After discussion of the uncertain role charity plays in his account of property, we examine how it is defined in the Essay Concerning Human Understanding, and then turn to the crucial position it occupies in his theological corpus. Though Locke’s understanding of charity seems fraught with ambiguities, the reason for these ambiguities relate to his configuration of charity as a disposition rather than a mere act, a configuration linked inextricably to his account of toleration

    Binocular vision in amblyopia : structure, suppression and plasticity

    The amblyopic visual system was once considered to be structurally monocular. However, it now evident that the capacity for binocular vision is present in many observers with amblyopia. This has led to new techniques for quantifying suppression that have provided insights into the relationship between suppression and the monocular and binocular visual deficits experienced by amblyopes. Furthermore, new treatments are emerging that directly target suppressive interactions within the visual cortex and, on the basis of initial data, appear to improve both binocular and monocular visual function, even in adults with amblyopia. The aim of this review is to provide an overview of recent studies that have investigated the structure, measurement and treatment of binocular vision in observers with strabismic, anisometropic and mixed amblyopia

    Brain Plasticity in the Adult: Modulation of Function in Amblyopia with rTMS

    SummaryAmblyopia is a cortically based visual disorder caused by disruption of vision during a critical early developmental period. It is often thought to be a largely intractable problem in adult patients because of a lack of neuronal plasticity after this critical period [1]; however, recent advances have suggested that plasticity is still present in the adult amblyopic visual cortex [2–6]. Here, we present data showing that repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) of the visual cortex can temporarily improve contrast sensitivity in the amblyopic visual cortex. The results indicate continued plasticity of the amblyopic visual system in adulthood and open the way for a potential new therapeutic approach to the treatment of amblyopia

    Dietary Prebiotics and Bioactive Milk Fractions Improve NREM Sleep, Enhance REM Sleep Rebound and Attenuate the Stress-Induced Decrease in Diurnal Temperature and Gut Microbial Alpha Diversity.

    Severe, repeated or chronic stress produces negative health outcomes including disruptions of the sleep/wake cycle and gut microbial dysbiosis. Diets rich in prebiotics and glycoproteins impact the gut microbiota and may increase gut microbial species that reduce the impact of stress. This experiment tested the hypothesis that consumption of dietary prebiotics, lactoferrin (Lf) and milk fat globule membrane (MFGM) will reduce the negative physiological impacts of stress. Male F344 rats, postnatal day (PND) 24, received a diet with prebiotics, Lf and MFGM (test) or a calorically matched control diet. Fecal samples were collected on PND 35/70/91 for 16S rRNA sequencing to examine microbial composition and, in a subset of rats; Lactobacillus rhamnosus was measured using selective culture. On PND 59, biotelemetry devices were implanted to record sleep/wake electroencephalographic (EEG). Rats were exposed to an acute stressor (100, 1.5 mA, tail shocks) on PND 87 and recordings continued until PND 94. Test diet, compared to control diet, increased fecal Lactobacillus rhamnosus colony forming units (CFU), facilitated non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep consolidation (PND 71/72) and enhanced rapid eye movement (REM) sleep rebound after stressor exposure (PND 87). Rats fed control diet had stress-induced reductions in alpha diversity and diurnal amplitude of temperature, which were attenuated by the test diet (PND 91). Stepwise multiple regression analysis revealed a significant linear relationship between early-life Deferribacteres (PND 35) and longer NREM sleep episodes (PND 71/72). A diet containing prebiotics, Lf and MFGM enhanced sleep quality, which was related to changes in gut bacteria and modulated the impact of stress on sleep, diurnal rhythms and the gut microbiota

    Interferometric Observations of Explosive Variables: V838 Mon, Nova Aql 2005, and RS Oph

    During the last two years we have used the Palomar Testbed Interferometer to observe several explosive variable stars, including V838 Monocerotis, V1663 Aquilae and recently RS Ophiuchi. We observed V838 Monocerotis approximately 34 months after its eruption, and were able to resolve the ejecta. Observations of V1663 Aql were obtained starting 9 days after peak brightness and continued for 10 days. We were able to resolve the milliarcsecond-scale emission and follow the expansion of the nova photosphere. When combined with radial-velocity information, these observations can be used to infer the distance to the nova. Finally we have resolved the recurrent nova RS Oph and can draw some preliminary conclusions regarding the emission morphology.Comment: 8 Pages, SPIE Astronomical Telescopes and Instrumentation 2006, Advances in Stellar Interferometery, 6268-16

    Prenatal exposure to recreational drugs affects global motion perception in preschool children

Rep. 5, 16921; doi: 10.1038/srep16921 (2015).Prenatal exposure to recreational drugs impairs motor and cognitive development; however it is currently unknown whether visual brain areas are affected. To address this question, we investigated the effect of prenatal drug exposure on global motion perception, a behavioural measure of processing within the dorsal extrastriate visual cortex that is thought to be particularly vulnerable to abnormal neurodevelopment. Global motion perception was measured in one hundred and forty-five 4.5-year-old children who had been exposed to different combinations of methamphetamine, alcohol, nicotine and marijuana prior to birth and 25 unexposed children. Self-reported drug use by the mothers was verified by meconium analysis. We found that global motion perception was impaired by prenatal exposure to alcohol and improved significantly by exposure to marijuana. Exposure to both drugs prenatally had no effect. Other visual functions such as habitual visual acuity and stereoacuity were not affected by drug exposure. Prenatal exposure to methamphetamine did not influence visual function. Our results demonstrate that prenatal drug exposure can influence a behavioural measure of visual development, but that the effects are dependent on the specific drugs used during pregnancy.This research was supported by the National Institutes on Drug Abuse grants 2RO1DA014948 and RO1DA021757 and the Auckland Medical Research Foundation
